Proactive Review...

Have you ever taken time to read the booklet that came with your IRA?  You say booklet?  Yes, every IRA comes with some documentation, usually a booklet.  The documentation is critical to understanding what the custodian will do at certain life events.

Do you ever wonder, what if I forgot something, what if I made a mistake, did I forget something important, or will I make an avoidable and irreversible mistake with my IRA?

With the realization you or your advisor might have missed something -- We are extending an opportunity to you. Our team meets with people to review our IRA checklist (covering 401k, IRA, 403b, 457, etc), which has 106 critical points, 14 points just on beneficiaries.  By the way, when you created your IRA did you cover 106 points?  It might not have been important then.  The intent of the review is to ensure there are no surprises with your IRA account(s) either for you or your beneficiaries.  Once again, ensuring your affairs are in order.

During previous reviews we have found errors with beneficiary statements, that the current custodian won’t pass the money to the heirs exactly how families want.  This is not a surprise you would want for your family.

Other issues that have been exposed relate to what the custodian will do with the funds in your account.  For example: there are companies that won't allow your heirs to take the IRA in a lump sum.  Some will force them to take the money out over a five year period of time.  Some won't allow your heirs to take the IRA as their own and move it to a new custodian.  Keep in mind your beneficiaries are restricted to following their hidden rules.

There is no charge for the initial appointment and if there is something we can do for you, such as the IRA review, we can discuss the fees further a that time.  The comprehensive IRA review is $175 and if you mention that you read about it on our web site we will discount that price by $25.  There is no obligation after sitting down for the initial appointment.  It is critical that we can all work together and the only way to determine that is to sitdown with each other.

Here are some questions you should ask yourself, and we’ll address during your review:

  • When you die what should your spouse do with your IRA?
  • Should your spouse put your IRA into his or her name?
  • Should your spouse consider passing some of it on to your other beneficiaries at that point?
  • Will the custodian for your IRA allow your beneficiaries to move it to a different company?
  • Will the custodian for your IRA guide your beneficiaries to avoid making irreversible mistakes?
